Bifidobacterium bifidum ATCC 29521 is a specific probiotic bacterial strain investigated for its therapeutic and preventive potential in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), particularly ulcerative colitis. As a live biotherapeutic, it works by modulating the gut microbiota composition, increasing microbial diversity, and inhibiting the colonization of opportunistic pathogens such as the Escherichia-Shigella genus. Preclinical research indicates that this strain alleviates intestinal inflammation by protecting the mucosal barrier integrity, potentially through the regulation of tight junction proteins (TJP) and the inhibition of the NF-kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway. In mouse models of dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis, administration of ATCC 29521 has been shown to significantly reduce clinical symptoms like weight loss and hematochezia while improving histopathological outcomes.
