Overview

Bifidobacterium bifidum BD-1 (BD-1) is a specific strain of probiotic bacteria originally isolated from the intestines of healthy infants in China. [2, 8] It is classified as a biologic (live bacterial strain) and is being investigated for its potential preventive and therapeutic effects on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), particularly long-term colitis. [2] The proposed mechanism of action involves remodeling the gut microbiota, enhancing the intestinal barrier, and modulating the host's immune response. [2, 11] Preclinical research in mouse models has demonstrated that early-life administration of BD-1 can protect against chemically-induced colitis by reducing inflammation, promoting the expression of proteins related to the mucosal barrier (such as MUC2, ZO-1, and occludin), and altering the composition of gut bacteria. [2] As of now, it appears to be primarily a research compound, as no specific pharmaceutical developer or commercial brand name has been identified in the available literature.
