Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bifidobacterium bifidum Bf-688 is a specific strain of probiotic bacteria being investigated as an adjunctive treatment for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children. Developed by Glac Biotech, this live microorganism is administered orally as a supplement. Clinical studies, including an open-label trial and a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (NCT04958460) conducted in Taiwan, have shown that Bf-688 can improve ADHD symptoms like inattention and hyperactivity, enhance neuropsychological performance in visual and auditory attention tests, and lead to weight gain in some patients. Its mechanism of action is believed to be through the gut-brain axis; it modulates the composition of the gut microbiota, notably by altering the Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes ratio, and may influence neurotransmitter pathways and reduce N-Glycan biosynthesis.
