Overview

Bifidobacterium bifidum BGN4 is a specific strain of probiotic bacteria isolated from healthy, breast-fed infants. [1] It is developed and patented by the South Korean company BIFIDO Co., Ltd. [2, 3] This strain has been granted Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) and New Dietary Ingredient (NDI) status by the US FDA. [1, 2] B. bifidum BGN4 is studied for its various health benefits, which are attributed to its ability to modulate the gut microbiome, enhance gut barrier integrity, and exert anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Research indicates it may have therapeutic potential in a range of conditions including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), cognitive decline, kidney disease, metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), obesity, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and eczema. [7, 8, 16, 2, 17] Its mechanism involves reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines, promoting the proliferation of regulatory T cells, and inhibiting pathways associated with inflammation and oxidative stress.
