Overview

Bifidobacterium bifidum CCFM16 is a specific probiotic bacterial strain belonging to the Bifidobacterium genus, identified and maintained by Jiangnan University's Culture Collection of Food Microorganisms (CCFM). It is primarily investigated as a live biotherapeutic product for the treatment of inflammatory and allergic conditions, specifically atopic dermatitis (AD). The strain functions by modulating the host's intestinal microbiota, where it has been shown to increase microbial alpha diversity and the proportion of Bacteroidetes while reducing the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes (F/B) ratio. These microbial shifts are intended to restore intestinal homeostasis and regulate systemic immune responses to alleviate clinical symptoms of AD. In clinical trials, while CCFM16 demonstrated significant effects on gut microbiota composition, its impact on clinical severity indices like the SCORAD score has been reported as less pronounced compared to other strains such as Lactobacillus plantarum CCFM8610.
