Overview

Bifidobacterium bifidum G9-1 (BBG9-1) is a probiotic strain isolated from a healthy individual and has been used for several decades as an intestinal drug, particularly in Japan. It is primarily indicated for the management of gastrointestinal disorders such as chronic constipation, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and to alleviate symptoms associated with rotavirus gastroenteritis. BBG9-1 exerts its effects by modulating the gut microbiota, enhancing mucosal barrier function, inducing mucosal protective factors (such as MUC2, MUC3, MUC4, TGFβ1, and TFF3), promoting regulatory T cell differentiation via upregulation of TGFβ1 and Foxp3 expression in the intestine, and normalizing water absorption through effects on SGLT-1. These mechanisms contribute to improved stool consistency, increased frequency of bowel movements in constipated patients[3], protection against NSAID-induced small intestine injury[1], and reduction of diarrhea severity during rotavirus infection[5]. BBG9-1 is considered safe with no significant adverse effects reported.
