Overview

Bifidobacterium bifidum PRL2010 is a specific strain of probiotic bacteria originally isolated from infant stool. This strain is a model organism for studying human-microbe coevolution and has several notable properties. It exhibits immunomodulatory activity by balancing the Th1/Th2 immune response, modulating the expression of cytokines (like IL-2, IL-6, and IL-8) via NF-κB activation, and reinforcing the mucosal barrier by upregulating genes for defensins and tight junctions. [1] Additionally, B. bifidum PRL2010 possesses sortase-dependent pili that mediate adherence to host cells and contribute to its immune-modulating effects. It also has a "cross-feeding" property, where its metabolism of complex carbohydrates supports the growth of other beneficial bifidobacteria in the gut. [1] Research has explored its potential therapeutic and prophylactic roles. A clinical trial investigated its use in pregnant and breastfeeding women to prevent atopic dermatitis in their children. [1] Preclinical studies have also examined its protective effects in models of ulcerative colitis, intestinal ischemia/reperfusion injury, and for cholesterol reduction. [2, 7, 10]
