Bifidobacterium bifidum PRL2010 is a specific strain of probiotic bacteria originally isolated from infant stool. This strain is a model organism for studying human-microbe coevolution and has several notable properties. It exhibits immunomodulatory activity by balancing the Th1/Th2 immune response, modulating the expression of cytokines (like IL-2, IL-6, and IL-8) via NF-κB activation, and reinforcing the mucosal barrier by upregulating genes for defensins and tight junctions.
