Overview

*Bifidobacterium breve* is a gram-positive, anaerobic, branched rod-shaped probiotic bacterium that is a prominent member of the human gut microbiota, particularly in breast-fed infants. As a live biotherapeutic product, it is utilized for its ability to modulate the intestinal environment, enhance gut barrier function, and regulate immune responses. *B. breve* exerts its effects through competitive exclusion of pathogens, production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) like acetate, and interaction with the host immune system via Toll-like receptors. Clinical research has investigated its efficacy in treating various conditions, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), ulcerative colitis, acute diarrhea, and pediatric asthma. It is also explored for its metabolic benefits in obesity and its potential to reduce allergic symptoms such as atopic dermatitis.
