Overview

Bifidobacterium breve A1 (also known as MCC1274) is a proprietary probiotic bacterial strain developed by Morinaga Milk Industry. Originally isolated from the intestinal tract of an infant, it is being developed as a live biotherapeutic product (LBP) for neurological and psychiatric conditions via the gut-brain axis. The strain has demonstrated the ability to suppress hippocampal inflammation and immune-reactive gene expression induced by amyloid-beta (Aβ). In preclinical models, it has been shown to restore hippocampal synaptic plasticity by regulating the expression of neuropsin (KLK8), postsynaptic density protein-95 (PSD-95), and synaptophysin. Clinical development is primarily focused on Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease, where it has reached Phase 2 trials in the U.S. and shown potential improvements in memory and visuospatial function. It is also being investigated for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), schizophrenia-related anxiety and depression, and Parkinson's disease.
