Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bifidobacterium breve B-3 is a proprietary human-residential probiotic strain of the species *Bifidobacterium breve*, developed by Morinaga Milk Industry. It is a non-motile, non-spore forming, rod-shaped anaerobic Gram-positive bacterium originally isolated from infant feces in 2009. This strain has been clinically studied for its effects on metabolic health and body composition. Clinical trials have shown that oral supplementation with *B. breve* B-3 can reduce body fat mass and percentage in pre-obese individuals without significant adverse effects[4][5][7]. Mechanistically, it supports healthy metabolism by modulating gut microbiota composition and function; it produces lactic and acetic acid in the gut to help break down food and absorb nutrients[1]. Additional studies suggest benefits for maintaining blood glucose, insulin sensitivity, cholesterol levels within normal ranges[3], enhancing intestinal barrier function[4], immune modulation (including upregulation of C3/CXCL6), and possibly increasing muscle mass when heat-killed preparations are used[7]. The safety of this strain has been confirmed through toxicity tests and genomic analysis.
