Research indicates that both live and heat-killed (paraprobiotic) forms of B2798 can mitigate symptoms of colitis, such as weight loss, colon damage, and splenomegaly, by modulating the gut microbiota and systemic inflammatory responses. The strain works by restructuring the gut microbiome—increasing the abundance of beneficial species like Mucispirillum schaedleri and Odoribacter splanchnicus—and normalizing cytokine levels by reducing pro-inflammatory markers like TNF-α and MPO while elevating anti-inflammatory markers like IL-10. Heat-killed B2798 has demonstrated enhanced regulatory effects on metabolic pathways, including the activation of the TCA cycle and the suppression of pantothenate biosynthesis, offering a potentially safer alternative to live probiotics for immunocompromised patients.
