Overview

Bifidobacterium breve Bif11 is a specific probiotic strain of the species Bifidobacterium breve that has been investigated for its neuroprotective properties, particularly in the context of Parkinson's disease (PD). In preclinical studies using the MPTP-induced rat model of PD, Bif11 supplementation demonstrated the ability to attenuate motor and cognitive impairments. The strain's mechanism of action involves the modulation of the gut-brain axis, leading to increased levels of tyrosine hydroxylase in the midbrain, a reduction in pro-inflammatory markers, and a decrease in oxidative and nitrosative stress. Furthermore, Bif11 helps restore the levels of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and improves intestinal epithelial permeability, addressing the gut dysbiosis and 'leaky gut' often associated with the progression of Parkinson's disease.
