Overview

Bifidobacterium breve BL3406 is a specific probiotic bacterial strain developed as a live biotherapeutic product. It is primarily investigated for its immunomodulatory properties, particularly in the context of autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. In clinical settings, BL3406 is often administered as part of a multi-strain probiotic consortium (including Lactobacillus casei BLn2401 and Lactobacillus salivarius BL2201) to supplement conventional disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (cDMARDs). The strain is thought to exert its therapeutic effect by modulating the gut-joint axis, enhancing gut barrier integrity, and shifting the immune response toward a more regulatory, anti-inflammatory state. Clinical trials have demonstrated that adjunctive treatment with this strain can lead to significant reductions in disease activity (DAS28), inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein, and patient-reported pain and disability.
