As a live biotherapeutic agent, Bv-889 is primarily utilized for its ability to colonize the human gastrointestinal tract and modulate the host's immune response. It has been clinically investigated for its potential to reduce the incidence of allergic diseases, such as allergic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis, and to support the development of a healthy gut microbiome in preterm infants. The strain functions by producing short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), competing with pathogenic bacteria for adhesion sites, and inducing the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines like IL-10.
