Overview

Bifidobacterium breve BX-18 (also known as DSM 29508) is a specific strain of the probiotic bacterium *Bifidobacterium breve* that was developed by Baxalta (now part of Takeda) as a live biotherapeutic product (LBP). The strain was primarily investigated for the treatment of atopic dermatitis and other allergic conditions. BX-18 works by modulating the host immune system, specifically by suppressing Th2-mediated inflammatory responses (reducing cytokines like IL-4 and IL-13) and promoting a balanced Th1/Th2 environment, potentially through the induction of regulatory T cells (Tregs). Although patented for therapeutic use, the program does not appear in current clinical pipelines and is considered discontinued or not pursued beyond preclinical stages.
