Overview

Bifidobacterium breve PRL2020 is a specific probiotic strain, marketed as Brevicillin®, being investigated for its ability to mitigate the gastrointestinal side effects of antibiotic therapy. A key feature of this strain is its intrinsic and non-transferable resistance to amoxicillin and amoxicillin/clavulanate, which allows it to survive in the gut during treatment with these common antibiotics. [1, 9] By maintaining the population of beneficial bifidobacteria, it helps to preserve the balance of the gut microbiota, which can reduce the incidence of antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD) and abdominal pain in patients, including children. [6, 10] The product is developed by Pharmextracta and has been the subject of clinical studies, including one sponsored by Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences. [6]
