Overview

Bifidobacterium breve SHMB 8001 is a novel probiotic strain isolated from human milk, currently being investigated as a live biotherapeutic for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In preclinical studies using DSS-induced colitis mouse models, the strain demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory properties. Its mechanism of action involves the restoration of intestinal barrier integrity by upregulating tight junction proteins, specifically occludin and claudin-1, and the modulation of the gut microbiota community. Furthermore, SHMB 8001 administration leads to a reduction in the levels of key proinflammatory cytokines, including TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6. The development is being led by researchers at Shanghai Children’s Hospital and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
