Overview
Bifidobacterium breve strain Yakult is a probiotic bacterial strain developed by Yakult Honsha, primarily administered as a fermented milk product (Mil-Mil). It is investigated for its potential to modulate the gut microbiota and exert anti-inflammatory effects, such as the induction of interleukin-10 (IL-10) production in peripheral blood mononuclear cells. The strain has been clinically evaluated for the maintenance of remission in patients with quiescent ulcerative colitis (UC). However, a significant multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled trial in Japan (B-FLORA) was discontinued after an interim analysis demonstrated a lack of efficacy in improving relapse-free survival compared to placebo.
