Overview

Bifidobacterium breve strain Yakult + Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota + galactooligosaccharides is a synbiotic combination consisting of two probiotic bacterial strains (*Bifidobacterium breve* strain Yakult and *Lactobacillus casei* strain Shirota, also classified as *Lacticaseibacillus paracasei* strain Shirota) and the prebiotic galactooligosaccharides (GOS). Developed by Yakult Honsha, this combination is designed to modulate the gut microbiota, increase beneficial bacterial counts, and enhance the production of short-chain fatty acids (particularly acetate) to maintain intestinal environment and barrier function. It is being evaluated in clinical trials as a supportive care therapy (such as Super Synbiotics LBG-P) to prevent infectious complications like enteritis and ventilator-associated pneumonia in critically ill patients with sepsis or severe systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). It is also under investigation to mitigate chemotherapy-induced adverse events (e.g., diarrhea and febrile neutropenia) in patients with gastric or esophageal cancer, and to improve intestinal function in short bowel syndrome.
