Overview

Bifidobacterium BX520 is a specific strain of *Bifidobacterium* that produces high levels of indole metabolites. It is being investigated for its potential to prevent brain inflammation in necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a severe gastrointestinal disease in premature infants. The mechanism of action involves modulating the indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 1 (IDO1)-kynurenine axis through targeted intervention in the gut microbiota. Specifically, it activates the ileal aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR), which improves the intestinal barrier by increasing the expression of tight junction proteins like ZO1 and Occludin. Furthermore, Bifidobacterium BX520 inhibits IDO1 protein levels in the hippocampus, thereby ameliorating brain inflammatory responses characterized by reduced levels of IL-1β and NF-κB.
