Overview

Bifidobacterium infantis BX-01 is a probiotic bacterial strain belonging to the species Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis, commonly found in the intestines of breastfed infants. This strain is used as a live biotherapeutic product and dietary supplement to support gut health, modulate immune function, and promote healthy development of the gastrointestinal microbiome in infants. Mechanistically, B. infantis strains are known for their ability to metabolize human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), produce short-chain fatty acids (notably acetate), exert anti-inflammatory effects by suppressing pro-inflammatory cytokines, and inhibit pathogenic microbes through production of biosurfactants and bacteriocins[1][3][4]. Clinical studies with related strains have shown benefits in reducing symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), lowering risk of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in preterm infants, improving weight gain in undernourished infants, and supporting overall immune development[1][4][6]. The specific BX-01 strain is marketed primarily for pediatric use but may also be included in multi-strain probiotic formulations.
