Overview

A combination probiotic product containing two specific live bacterial strains: *Lactobacillus plantarum* 299 (also known as Lp299v) and *Bifidobacterium infantis* Cure 21. It is classified as a biologic therapy and was investigated in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial for patients with poor ileal pouch function following proctocolectomy for ulcerative colitis. [2] The proposed mechanism involves modulating the gut microbiome to reduce inflammation and improve intestinal function. However, the pivotal study did not demonstrate a significant benefit over placebo in improving pouch functional scores or inflammation markers, and the hypothesis that it improves pouch-related dysfunction was not confirmed. [2, 4, 7] The *Lactobacillus plantarum* 299v strain is developed by Probi AB. [10]
