PBCLN-014 is an investigational live biotherapeutic product containing the specific strain Bifidobacterium infantis PBCLN-014. It is being developed by Prolacta Bioscience. This probiotic is designed to modulate the gut microbiome. Its mechanism of action involves colonizing the gut, producing beneficial metabolites like short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), competing with pathogenic bacteria, and modulating the host's immune system to reduce inflammation. [5, 9] For instance, it can decrease the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α and enhance intestinal barrier function by increasing the expression of tight junction proteins. [6] PBCLN-014 has been studied in a Phase 2a clinical trial in combination with human milk oligosaccharides (PBCLN-010) for its effects on the gut microbiome in patients receiving allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation. [2, 3] However, development for hematologic neoplasms has been discontinued. [1]
