Bifidobacterium infantis-TK is a gene therapy construct that utilizes the anaerobic bacterium Bifidobacterium infantis as a delivery vehicle for the herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase (HSV-TK) gene. This system is designed for suicide gene therapy, where the HSV-TK enzyme converts a prodrug, such as ganciclovir, into a cytotoxic metabolite, leading to the death of cells expressing the enzyme. It has been investigated for its antitumor effects, specifically in models of renal cell carcinoma.
