Overview

Bifidobacterium lactis AD011 is a specific strain of probiotic bacteria isolated from the feces of a healthy, breast-fed infant by the Korean company BIFIDO Co., Ltd. It is also referred to by its formal taxonomic name, *Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis* AD011. This strain has been studied for its immunomodulatory properties, particularly in the context of allergic diseases. Preclinical studies have shown that oral administration can suppress allergic responses in mouse models of food allergy by reducing levels of allergen-specific IgE, IgG1, and IgA. The mechanism is believed to involve shifting the immune response from a Th2-dominant profile to a Th1/regulatory T cell (Treg) profile, characterized by decreased levels of the Th2 cytokine IL-4 and increased levels of the Th1 cytokine IFN-gamma and the regulatory cytokine IL-10. B. lactis AD011 has received GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) and NDI (New Dietary Ingredient) status from the US FDA and is investigated for its potential to prevent or alleviate conditions such as food allergy, eczema, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
