Overview

**Bifidobacterium lactis BB-12** is a defined probiotic bacterial strain, also classified as *Bifidobacterium animalis* subsp. *lactis* BB-12. The Medical University of Warsaw evaluated it as an oral microbiome-modulating intervention in children with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes mellitus, administered together with *Lactobacillus rhamnosus* GG once daily for 6 months. The rationale was that modulation of gut microbial ecology could influence intestinal barrier integrity and systemic immune responses relevant to autoimmune islet-cell destruction. In the completed randomized controlled trial, the BB-12 and LGG co-administration regimen did not significantly preserve residual pancreatic beta-cell function, measured using meal-stimulated C-peptide response.
