Drug intelligence / Profile preview
*Bifidobacterium lactis* HN001 is a specific probiotic bacterial strain originally isolated from a yogurt source and classified within the *Bifidobacterium animalis* subsp. *lactis* group. It is widely utilized in dietary supplements and functional foods, particularly for its immunomodulatory properties. Clinical research has demonstrated its potential to reduce the risk of atopic dermatitis (eczema) and allergic sensitization in infants when administered to mothers during pregnancy and to infants during early life. The strain is thought to work by modulating the gut microbiota and interacting with the host immune system to promote a balanced Th1/Th2 response and enhance intestinal barrier function. In addition to allergy prevention, it has been investigated for its role in gut health, metabolic function, and mental well-being. The strain was originally developed by Fonterra and is currently commercialized as part of the HOWARU probiotic range by IFF (formerly DuPont/Danisco).
