Overview

Bifidobacterium longum APC1472 is an investigational live biotherapeutic product (probiotic) being developed for the management of obesity and related metabolic conditions. It is a specific strain of *Bifidobacterium longum* that was initially selected for its ability to attenuate ghrelin receptor signaling in vitro. [1] Preclinical studies in mice showed that it reduced body weight gain, fat accumulation, and improved glucose tolerance. [3] A clinical study in overweight and obese humans (NCT04042181) did not show a significant effect on the primary endpoint of BMI, but did demonstrate a statistically significant reduction in fasting blood glucose levels compared to placebo. [1, 3] In a sub-analysis of obese participants, it also increased active ghrelin levels and reduced the cortisol awakening response, suggesting modulation of the ghrelinergic system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. [2, 5]
