Overview

Bifidobacterium longum BB-46 is a specific probiotic bacterial strain developed by Chr. Hansen. It is a primary active component of the multi-strain probiotic product Bifiform, where it is frequently formulated alongside Enterococcus faecium ENCfa-68. BB-46 is utilized for the management of various gastrointestinal disorders, most notably post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome (PI-IBS) and as an adjunct to Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy to mitigate antibiotic-associated dysbiosis and gastrointestinal side effects. The strain functions by restoring the balance of the intestinal microbiome, inhibiting the growth of opportunistic pathogens, and reducing mucosal inflammation as evidenced by decreased fecal calprotectin levels. Additionally, BB-46 promotes the production of beneficial metabolites, including short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) like butyrate, and has been investigated for its potential to modulate obesity-related gut microbiota profiles.
