Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bifidobacterium longum CECT 7347 is a specific strain of probiotic bacteria isolated from a healthy breast-fed infant. It is being developed and studied by ADM both as a live probiotic (coded as ES1) and as a heat-treated, non-viable postbiotic (coded as HT-ES1 or ES1 HT). Clinical and preclinical studies have investigated its potential therapeutic effects across a range of conditions. For celiac disease, it has been shown in animal models and exploratory human trials to ameliorate gliadin-induced inflammation and immune responses. [22348021, 23023000, 24774670] Both the live and heat-treated forms were found to be effective in significantly reducing symptom severity in adults with diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D). [38630015] The postbiotic version has also demonstrated a significant reduction in symptoms for adults with allergic rhinitis. [42047238] Furthermore, it has been included in multi-strain probiotic formulations studied for atopic dermatitis and for its antioxidant effects during intense physical exercise. [32524647, 33671691, 33921166] The mechanism of action is believed to involve modulation of the gut microbiome, enhancement of gut barrier function, and regulation of the host immune system by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-α and modulating T-cell responses.
