Overview

Bifidobacterium longum NCC3001 is a specific probiotic strain from the Nestlé Culture Collection, primarily investigated for its psychotropic properties and effects on the gut-brain axis. It is classified as a live biotherapeutic product and has been evaluated in clinical trials for its ability to reduce depression scores and improve quality of life in patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Mechanistically, NCC3001 is thought to communicate with the central nervous system via the vagus nerve and by modulating the excitability of enteric sensory neurons. Clinical studies have also explored its potential in managing skin sensitivity and perinatal mood disturbances, although results in the latter have been mixed. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have demonstrated that the strain can reduce brain responses to negative emotional stimuli in the amygdala and fronto-limbic regions.
