Overview

Bifidobacterium longum NSP002 is a specific bacterial strain identified as a dominant gut commensal that is significantly enriched by dietary fiber, specifically low-esterified pectin. It is being investigated as a live biotherapeutic product (LBP) for the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases, such as ulcerative colitis. Research conducted at Nanchang University indicates that NSP002, particularly when administered as part of a microbial consortium, exerts a protective effect against colitis by remodeling the gut microbiome, increasing the production of propionic acid, and modulating intestinal homeostasis. Mechanistically, it has been shown to activate the PI3K/calcium signaling pathway and influence systemic metabolic reprogramming, specifically affecting phenylalanine metabolism.
