Bifidobacterium longum R0175 is a specific probiotic strain developed by Lallemand Health Solutions, classified as a live biotherapeutic product (LBP). It is primarily investigated for its role in the gut-brain axis, particularly in neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric conditions. Clinical evidence suggests that R0175 can improve cognitive function (measured by MMSE) and normalize serum amino acid profiles, including branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) and aromatic amino acids (AAAs), in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. Preclinical studies in mice have also indicated that R0175 may enhance the antiseizure efficacy of medications like sodium valproate, potentially through the modulation of gut metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) like butyrate. While often marketed in combination with other strains for stress and mood support, it is also evaluated as a monotherapy in clinical research.
