Overview

*Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis* (*B. infantis*) is a Gram-positive, anaerobic bacterium and a specialized subspecies of the *Bifidobacterium longum* species, primarily known for its role as a key commensal in the infant gut microbiome. It is uniquely adapted to utilize human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) found in breast milk, which it ferments into short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) like acetate and lactate. This metabolic activity acidifies the intestinal environment, inhibiting the growth of pathogens and promoting gut barrier integrity. In clinical research led by Emanual Maverakis, MD, at the University of California, Davis, *B. infantis* is being evaluated as a probiotic dietary supplement for healthy breastfed newborns. The Phase I study (NCT04750473) investigates the safety and optimal dosing required for stable gut colonization, with the long-term goal of preventing immune-mediated conditions such as atopic dermatitis (eczema) and food allergies by fostering early-life immune tolerance.
