Overview

Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis R0033 is a specific probiotic strain originally developed by the Institut Rosell, which is now the research and development center for Lallemand Health Solutions. [4, 5] This strain is designed to support gut health and modulate the immune system. [10] It is particularly effective at metabolizing human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), complex sugars found in human breast milk that are indigestible by infants on their own. [12, 15] In clinical trials, B. infantis R0033 has been studied as part of a synbiotic formulation (often combined with other probiotics and a prebiotic like fructooligosaccharide) for its potential therapeutic effects in autoimmune conditions, including connective tissue diseases and systemic lupus erythematosus. [NCT03494036, NCT06659068] Research suggests it may work by modulating the gut microbiota, which in turn can influence the host's immune response by increasing regulatory T-cells and decreasing pro-inflammatory cytokines like IL-17. [NCT03494036] The strain has also been approved by China's National Health Commission for safe use in infant formula. [14]
