Bifidobacterium pseudolongum is a beneficial gut bacterium that plays a significant role in modulating gut microbiota composition and influencing various physiological processes. It has been shown to alleviate intestinal injury, reduce inflammation, and contribute to anti-tumor immunity through its exopolysaccharides (EPSs) which are sensed by dendritic cells via TLR2-MyD88, leading to the induction of IL-12 and TNF-α. It also produces beneficial metabolites such as propionic acid (PA) and indoleacetic acid (IAA), which are linked to cognitive function and neuroprotection. Furthermore, B. pseudolongum is involved in cholesterol-lowering mechanisms by modulating the FXR-FGF15-CYP7A1 axis and contributes to intestinal radioprotection by increasing creatine levels and activating AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). Its dysregulation or supplementation has been implicated in conditions such as ketamine-induced cystitis, hyperglycemia-induced osteoporosis, morphine tolerance, fatty liver disease, Henoch-Schönlein purpura, depression, and Alzheimer's disease.
