Overview

Bifilac is a commercial synbiotic and multi-strain probiotic formulation widely used in clinical practice, particularly in India. The standard composition typically includes four probiotic strains: *Enterococcus faecalis* (T-110), *Clostridium butyricum* (TO-A), *Bacillus mesentericus* (TO-A), and *Bacillus coagulans* (historically labeled as *Lactobacillus sporogenes*). It is often formulated as a synbiotic by including prebiotics such as fructooligosaccharides (FOS). Bifilac is primarily indicated for managing gastrointestinal disorders, including acute rotaviral diarrhea, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and irritable bowel syndrome. Its mechanism of action involves restoring the balance of the intestinal microbiota, inhibiting the growth of enteric pathogens through competitive exclusion and the production of lactic acid and short-chain fatty acids, and modulating the host immune system. Beyond gastrointestinal health, research has explored its use as an adjunct in the treatment of chronic periodontitis and for its potential immunomodulatory effects in parasitic infections.
