BIK peptide is an experimental therapeutic agent designed to mimic or deliver the activity of the Bcl-2-interacting killer (BIK) protein, a pro-apoptotic member of the Bcl-2 family. In pulmonary research, BIK has been identified as a regulator of neuroendocrine cells (NECs) within the airway epithelium. Research conducted at Mass General Brigham and Brigham and Women’s Hospital suggests that BIK transcriptional activity is localized to airway and alveolar epithelial cells and that BIK induces the expression of UCHL1, a marker for NECs. The peptide formulation often utilizes a TAT (transactivator of transcription) cell-penetrating peptide linkage and lipid coating to facilitate cellular uptake. It is being investigated for its potential role in lung regeneration and repair, particularly in conditions like emphysema where BIK deficiency is linked to disease progression.
