Overview

BIL-1 is a novel iodinated boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY or BDP) derivative developed as a photosensitizer for the treatment of onychomycosis (fungal nail infection). It is designed for use in photodynamic therapy (PDT), where the compound is applied topically to the affected nail and subsequently activated by light irradiation. Upon activation, BIL-1 generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as singlet oxygen, which exert a potent antifungal effect by damaging fungal cell membranes and organelles. The drug is currently being evaluated in clinical trials by the Shanghai Skin Disease Hospital and Tongji University School of Medicine to assess its safety and efficacy as a localized treatment for fungal infections.
