BILB 1941 ZW is a small molecule non-nucleoside inhibitor of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) NS5B RNA-dependent RNA polymerase. Developed by Boehringer Ingelheim, it was primarily investigated for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus infection, specifically genotype 1. In Phase 1/2 clinical trials, the drug was administered as an oral solution every 8 hours. Although it demonstrated antiviral activity, particularly in subtype 1b, its development was discontinued due to dose-limiting gastrointestinal side effects, most notably diarrhea, which prevented the escalation to therapeutic doses required for optimal efficacy.
