Overview

BILR 355 + ritonavir is a fixed-dose combination of the investigational non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) **BILR 355** and the protease inhibitor **ritonavir**. BILR 355 is a potent NNRTI developed for the treatment of HIV-1 infection, including forms resistant to first-generation NNRTIs. Ritonavir is co-administered at low doses as a pharmacokinetic enhancer (“booster”) due to its inhibition of the cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme, thereby increasing systemic exposure of BILR 355 and prolonging its half-life. The combination is studied in both treatment-naïve and NNRTI-experienced HIV-infected patients, but BILR 355 is considered investigational and has not advanced to late-phase development or approval.
