Drug intelligence / Profile preview
BIM-23458 (also known as PRL-2903) is a selective peptide antagonist of the somatostatin receptor type 2 (SSTR2). It was synthesized by Dr. David H. Coy at Tulane University and has been investigated in preclinical models of diabetes. By blocking SSTR2, BIM-23458 prevents somatostatin-mediated inhibition of glucagon secretion from pancreatic alpha-cells, thereby restoring the glucagon and corticosterone counterregulatory responses to insulin-induced hypoglycemia. It serves as a prototype SSTR2 antagonist for the prevention of hypoglycemia in type 1 diabetes.
