Drug intelligence / Profile preview
A bimatoprost-eluting contact lens delivery system developed by Vistakon Pharmaceuticals (a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson) for the treatment of open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. This drug-device combination is designed to provide continuous, sustained release of bimatoprost, a prostaglandin analog, directly to the eye. Bimatoprost acts as an agonist at prostaglandin F (FP) receptors, increasing the outflow of aqueous humor through both the uveoscleral and trabecular pathways, thereby reducing intraocular pressure (IOP). The system was evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials where 'High Dose' and 'Low Dose' versions of the device were compared to standard bimatoprost 0.03% ophthalmic solution. While the technology aimed to improve patient adherence over traditional eye drops, the development of the bimatoprost-specific lens appears to have been discontinued or stalled in favor of other ocular drug delivery platforms.
