Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bimin formula (also known as Bimin Fang) is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal preparation developed by the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine specifically for the treatment of allergic rhinitis. The formula is designed to address the TCM pattern of Lung-Spleen Qi Deficiency, which is frequently associated with chronic nasal allergies. It typically consists of a combination of several medicinal herbs, including *Astragalus membranaceus* (Huangqi), *Atractylodes macrocephala* (Baizhu), *Saposhnikovia divaricata* (Fangfeng), and *Magnolia biondii* (Xinyi). Mechanistically, Bimin formula acts as an immunomodulator that restores the Th1/Th2 cytokine balance. It has been shown to downregulate the Th2-mediated immune response, leading to a significant reduction in serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels and a decrease in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13. Clinical studies conducted in China have demonstrated its efficacy in alleviating hallmark symptoms of allergic rhinitis, including paroxysmal sneezing, rhinorrhea, and nasal congestion, often showing comparable results to standard antihistamines with a favorable safety profile.
