Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bio Blue 90 Plus is a "heavy" ophthalmic staining solution composed of 0.05% w/v Brilliant Blue G (BBG) and 4% Polyethylene Glycol (PEG). Developed by Biotech Vision Care, it is used as a surgical aid during vitreoretinal procedures to selectively stain the internal limiting membrane (ILM). The addition of PEG increases the density of the solution, allowing the dye to sink rapidly through the vitreous cavity to the posterior pole and settle on the macula without necessitating a fluid-air exchange. This selective staining provides surgeons with high visual contrast, facilitating the safe and precise peeling of the ILM, which is a critical step in treating conditions such as macular holes, epiretinal membranes, and vitreomacular traction. The formulation is typically designed to be iso-osmolar and biocompatible to minimize the risk of retinal toxicity.
