Overview

Bio-E-Gel is a brand name for a formulation of **estradiol**, a naturally occurring estrogen used as hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in menopausal women. It is primarily indicated for the relief of moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms (hot flashes) and vulvovaginal atrophy (vaginal dryness and irritation) associated with menopause. As an agonist of the estrogen receptors alpha (ERα) and beta (ERβ), estradiol mimics the effects of endogenous hormones to stabilize physiological functions disrupted by declining estrogen levels. Clinical use requires caution in women with an intact uterus due to the risk of endometrial hyperplasia, which typically necessitates the co-administration of a progestogen. Bio-E-Gel is contraindicated in patients with a history of breast cancer, uterine cancer, or other hormone-dependent malignancies. The drug is known to interact with hepatic enzyme inducers such as carbamazepine, phenobarbital, and rifampin, which may decrease its therapeutic efficacy.
