Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bio-HA is a biologically fermented, non-animal-derived formulation of **hyaluronic acid** used primarily for intra-articular injection to treat pain associated with **osteoarthritis** of the knee. It is a high-molecular-weight hyaluronan product manufactured via bacterial fermentation (as opposed to avian sources), designed to replace or supplement endogenous hyaluronic acid in synovial fluid, increasing its viscosity, lubricating the joint, and thereby reducing pain and improving mobility. The most widely known brand of Bio-HA is ORTHOVISC. The **mechanism of action** is physical: hyaluronic acid functions mainly by restoring viscoelasticity to synovial fluid, reducing friction in the joint and modulating inflammatory responses via interaction with cell surface receptors (such as CD44), and extracellular matrix proteins. Bio-HA is biocompatible and is associated with fewer immunogenic reactions compared to avian-derived, cross-linked hyaluronan products[3].
