Overview

The Bio-Manguinhos Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccine is a bivalent, live attenuated viral vaccine developed by the Immunobiological Technology Institute (Bio-Manguinhos) of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) in Brazil. It is composed of the attenuated measles virus (Schwarz strain) and the attenuated rubella virus (Wistar RA27/3 strain). The vaccine is designed to provide active immunity against both measles and rubella infections. It has been evaluated in Phase II/III clinical trials (notably NCT03148990) in 11-month-old infants, demonstrating safety and immunogenicity comparable to standard MMR vaccines. In September 2022, Bio-Manguinhos submitted the vaccine for WHO prequalification to facilitate its inclusion in global immunization programs, and it is currently part of the institute's vaccine portfolio.
