Overview

BioCartilage is a micronized allograft cartilage matrix developed by Arthrex, designed to provide a natural tissue scaffold for the repair of articular cartilage defects. It consists of dehydrated, fragmented human articular cartilage that retains the native extracellular matrix components, including Type II collagen, proteoglycans, and endogenous growth factors. When used in conjunction with bone marrow stimulation techniques such as microfracture, BioCartilage acts as a conductive scaffold that improves the quality of the repair tissue, aiming to produce hyaline-like cartilage rather than the fibrocartilage typically associated with microfracture alone. It is typically mixed with autologous blood products, such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC), to create a paste that is applied to the debrided defect site.
