Biocoral is a natural bone graft substitute biomaterial derived from the calcium carbonate exoskeleton of specific coral species. Composed of over 98% calcium carbonate in the form of aragonite, it features a porous architecture that is both structurally and chemically similar to human cancellous bone. Biocoral functions as an osteoconductive scaffold, allowing for the infiltration of new bone-forming cells and blood vessels. As the material is slowly resorbed by the body, it is replaced by native bone tissue. It is primarily indicated for use in orthopedic, oral, and maxillofacial surgeries to repair bone defects and can also serve as a delivery system for the local release of pharmaceuticals such as antibiotics or chemotherapeutic agents.
